And it might even get me in trouble with the IP police. But I digress… What I’ll try to do here is to balance flash with ambient at twilight (or close to twilight). Here’s where I started:</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_0rUVyNrBV1HdVl-oz3eLK2YaPOl7LobTFMdrGtKQrinpasPj5jk0RTBBmh4C3sDSphZH496NjixFMyupXuTNzgeh0l1dDngHZhjyW2LzCls0H_YfPKnnUd4vDXN5afmeluvhIjQ78h2m/s1600-h/IMG_2087%5B4%5D.jpg"><img title="IMG_2087" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="160" alt="IMG_2087" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxPWTWRIrILpdXdmMQmzsiWuKMEmrHkPY6DJB97iKZlTv2t0RmmuglPcs3QDWEIWTvQejzL9CRTFc9cOVi7Bodd73xn4LJdjqHTRC2PB8JBSZg6naouwkB-Wz2SyKITfpIZA2MpO7h-OZc/?imgmax=800" width="240" border="0" /></a> </p> <p>Not very twilight-ish, is it? I could have stopped down the aperture a bit (shootin’ in manual but automatically dialing in f/5.6, and it never occurred to me to darken that sky by stopping down, even though I had about 3 more stops of power left in my flash… bleh!).</p> <div class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent" id="scid:0a7b020c-2e51-4379-b078-a5387e1e26be:77e45f11-b47b-4f8d-97c7-cedbe42d84ee" style="padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; float: none; padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-top: 0px"><a name='more'></a></div> <p>Since I totally refused to actually <em>think</em> while shooting this series, I had to wait a while for the sky to darken a bit (yeah, ‘cause everyone knows you can’t darken the sky by going from f/5.6 to f/8 and then setting the flash to 1/8th + 0.3 instead of 1/16th + 0.3… jeez!).</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvoBDjgdculTR7KAn3OuFRjmDhCN4Ah_UXX5La3eGCA3JFo2BYUcRYS0QVubAavXU96muQAF8JjWXEF1ywhzCI1xDWRaPE1CsgxIqimIIeuLoYYlZBHOSqwT6lpCr_lfxUHaWs6mEPAN0g/s1600-h/IMG_2111%5B4%5D.jpg"><img title="IMG_2111" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="160" alt="IMG_2111" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNqWtWwdeaZKKOg_SySZTaqrcsObr8cNo9ln2d3zkUAZW6xdmN5ir1_suax-7tefVJ7_bPoDQsBkckPDMwdIT34MHQ_HGAFSKU7rGP6XM5n0wkGYj-Pxj363P-G8bprev_sRceRr97Zn6w/?imgmax=800" width="240" border="0" /></a> </p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5LPQZCaSp_2v0LDjmPSHYmP_MJP7zFy_Hnmzm9Q6j8bEOsiajbOr2BdJfo57OjdpMgjYLubapMWDYaL_IIfZ7Uc6AkwHqNeAUJAghU0kQ-AMPppfdIDvFYvQzJpaYJNOQ5L_vxO2diBeR/s1600-h/IMG_2108%5B3%5D.jpg"><img title="IMG_2108" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="160" alt="IMG_2108" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq5b91L2fFQHv-Y17qyB2moXFUHTwrs4J_MTI-CexSpER2L2ROzdJ7MHNoUdLhmQSdFx03Ylnel00D8mve6WyKqbNaH_CrB8Wc6MvApmmDmzPpoFCXIwHCAOtu64b7JS1jq48EKxVXMTg3/?imgmax=800" width="240" border="0" /></a> </p> <p>These have more twilight feel, but still weren’t “just right” Oh, and composition had taken the day off, too. Only center of the frame subjects… good grief!</p> <p>My subjects had to leave, so I coaxed my son to model a bit afterwards, for an even more “twilight” feel:</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAmLHcd8KqN2h4L7leocpUK8tk2RddzGABJFEfkk2a_jce8ZOi0AHHr4H7w7BJ6t61DUultkZngL76hEADMj2SrrxE0OY6b60s_ikuQGW9h5v46LnrV1SRr3IpfGLInG8IUgNyO6fKohTL/s1600-h/IMG_2117%5B4%5D.jpg"><img title="IMG_2117" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="160" alt="IMG_2117" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhM0C_nEA72mfHn7L-VbbcKVQmfG1g8s0T5dAIxeFjjyt_cMAoOV6PV7f9jrNenFHVmfCWlQHgY2BGIIwsxhxbGb0bzw9UaD02qFfgPXndlQz6NMg4yyTjLdQikF7KmzVk7xc1Q0lec_q0U/?imgmax=800" width="240" border="0" /></a> </p> <p></p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie3DyZ9UMr4M1AZe97lz1hyvzkJiPvs2uUQqOx5Xle40g9pNKjjSVyRqIqXQGrK7E4TrqKLeFi30oRl41jEAkhDyAuHwxj7halcvNKWiJfq10_1eDFcDqqIlEXEIgGWHzCqpa9M037DT2W/s1600-h/IMG_2122%5B4%5D.jpg"><img title="IMG_2122" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="160" alt="IMG_2122" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu0nAK7pD7PCF5wQE7gKFKuiTb3Bk2cZcnrLWCSkADcS4XDyNQ4VyOtUlYh_wBMhxL2SDcnif4wGfvwmotacs9i__43briD93QbBY9HzDM4Tk7wHhrZssMtHVFu0Y-obtpbjS1MznFtWaM/?imgmax=800" width="240" border="0" /></a> </p> <p>Now that’s more like it! I should have tried for a more uniform background, of course, but hey, you work with what you’ve got. The other flash is a 285 HV, hand held and shot through a bigger piece of tracing paper into the wall and ceiling. Hardly what I would call “easily reproducible”!</p> <p>I uploaded the test shots over at <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/joemaron/sets/72157623895357445/" target="_blank">Flickr</a>. In the end I decided not to use Portraiture on it… lucky it wasn’t a “she” or I’d be in trouble!)</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCsX8bH2KxVx4JaOj3Q5YiXfPAffu-yZSQv5RA_MWLsmrmfB0BGwK44XDiKAKkn4ZmbRam7-0CK3HtpHK4VB3hiD8u9OUUkR5ScPU-q9oItI_EeI42DmDJFvHDTrsMEiB2JJLS6nB_teLG/s1600-h/IMG_1836%5B9%5D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1836" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="209" alt="IMG_1836" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5L_1wzGBrybXUXKJA42Q27MWTrMqkBNGyLtsW1m8JoxY2U65HHtWTuhLFY6WeyzctT5n7PfcpsIvEavhyon8faIXclqGS0PQH7RPXYBftatWtkevA8KR_xEmsMXuvfiasDh-ZZaoIoPOw/?imgmax=800" width="240" border="0" /></a> </p> <p>(I ditched the borders on these pics, I think they look cleaner this way…).</p> <p>More pics (lot’s more!) after the jump.</p> <div class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent" id="scid:0a7b020c-2e51-4379-b078-a5387e1e26be:d943c12b-c553-4ff1-9084-715ac79d0cbd" style="padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; float: none; padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-top: 0px"><a name='more'></a></div> <p>I wanted to get the lighting right on my subject first, and then move on to other matters, such as a better background. My first attempt had pretty dark shadows, so I added some paper reflectors in front to bring up the shadows to what you see above. I started out like this:</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEYWAyQjFK1wh8F9dZjhGn3bz87eYkmKNkcoXL8j8BOIg9hKPmB9XEnqct_G54TBp1nJy7b1cx6BZ_sjjnEk2SQ_DAlWX8pGJ2WeLASoOQ3lJIADjmY10hXyTrAboBdtvT0C0hETWOp44w/s1600-h/IMG_1835%5B4%5D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1835" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="222" alt="IMG_1835" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikVBpMebKP5cVzQWG6VrMMQFrQR1UBpoDSTrvjHWnyellX9qV1Wc-mH7Fe5guebFy61FDUzBcUrKsfQsC67T5YF18CeJ4lVMsitbCk-pNz8CkPRVYTVIgaKEHmCvniAz-SHm3yP0ptAkFQ/?imgmax=800" width="240" border="0" /></a> </p> <p>(Sorry, wasn’t using a tripod for this one, so the crops are all over the place). What happens when you balance a bottle of glue on a flashlight… and then turn it on? All kinds of cool things happen, that’s what:</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRl_3lNAFbnNIkJ1mcWPaNnfhvvXxRNLvNtpWcZV3A2k1YRA9Lm-XWDlQW43Me5dr133lYYPUPdfw8m8d3-cAMBdLQ4EjMJpmEXvuijeiOAf-vahJ5mQOBCKkmJroxcpOAdmvUdcPJ7tvq/s1600-h/IMG_1833%5B11%5D.jpg" target="_blank"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMG_1833" border="0" alt="IMG_1833" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxeJaKTEpL8nOCUmcWGLg0NfMEQM3QCXP3e-8C-YjoOWhEo4vNYNmOt8vP71BIyaYwDV2nt8jAnLM-E8v5AbrdU-b-ZeWpWPXvg1gYX28eR2xqUoqJdkCAA8WZexmhY8I-UXW2gNme99uc/?imgmax=800" width="164" height="244" /></a> </p> <p>Click on the pic for a larger image. What we’re seeing here is a whole lotta things: We have diffuse reflection all over the place, we have direct transmission (both through the clear plastic bottle and through the clear glue), which gives us refraction, we have diffuse transmission… you name it. The only thing I’m pretty sure we don’t have here is direct reflection, since as far as I can see there’s no way to get direct reflection (the angles don’t work).</p> <p>Not bad, huh? Next up, some killer tomatoes ;-)</p> Joey (aka Pepe)http://www.blogger.com/profile/12970189864356104845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7489210869133035069.post-72628985216479109932010-05-02T23:03:00.001-04:002010-05-02T23:03:31.292-04:00Flash + ambient, indoors (part 2)<p>After taking pictures of the car guard, I decided to try my hand at some more ambient + flash balancing, but this time I wanted to control the spill on my background a bit more, so I went with a cardboard grid on my flash, instead of an umbrella.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5jnLzIcxzDoKKq2imZHkQ94JRa_CImi7Z4ObrV-Jbcf5DSEe07ZXmIFMrhnc6iYEHaiL7r2qONDpU8aKpucx8zse4mj_QlX8wIEVzQHS9m4s_ErZUp8QAwhLaRE3BOyTu6K4kxZ7NnHUS/s1600-h/IMG_1819%5B2%5D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMG_1819" border="0" alt="IMG_1819" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilOgzUkTT1s-U3gov3x8LYENiPLjrpZMxmDS8xqdemxFHOOCZRsRCKTEdii3CmM25egeCrq4IKngz6gmYN30MOJTRVrfe0N5ENBZNJ4w0IqHABTyzUOzrAxuCUeIJJdzhlXrD8zjazTcMl/?imgmax=800" width="164" height="244" /></a> </p> <p>It took a few tries until I got the direction and flash output “right” (since it’s basically a matter of taste). Settings: ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/200, flash at 1/8 (up and to the right). Ambient only looked like this:</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG19NxsNUqujlmhECi6gKhVXPTeVnraHJUutUhyphenhyphenmuOHeU-xouDVhYiTek97vw6_G1tYy94z-v_aSythorq1vqDB7Zelw110msvtWMbM3BRqvhtV4P73qJpcQP4Dj6dN1YtibPuudMzEnNk/s1600-h/IMG_1814%5B2%5D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMG_1814" border="0" alt="IMG_1814" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN7nLv_Ruhyphenhyphenc_whSSbRrYuiu6ACb6Y8q8g2602YcZN863M-FXIHFCC9JXMRqYTcK8goQZTCchziiYN0UXOnYwc2ZvOhhZzI6czqHk9UYGEZGPUOqNViEaDcFT6PSpE8oPm0Nbf6cM-BiOQ/?imgmax=800" width="164" height="244" /></a>  </p> <p>Clearly, this time I’m having very little spill into the background. Since the flash had a grid, that last photo has some background areas much lighter than the foreground, something that doesn’t work for me in this pic.</p> <p>Unfortunately, no setup pics this time, as it was close to lunch time and I had to hurry ;-)</p> Joey (aka Pepe)http://www.blogger.com/profile/12970189864356104845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7489210869133035069.post-61783254012938327192010-05-02T21:50:00.001-04:002010-05-02T21:50:26.975-04:00Flash + ambient, indoors (part 1)<p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8UuCyCD_4TLdcrcTmeuflO8C68jPtWXWrWOB2zK4hgy_R9iOrfWCUnTccfAYVVWZ1e07hiAQUPsfYbZ0RLYiQUnAnFeA4JTwbyN62DV9GxAl1frFhIJ-HvxNLEBMjJMu2VdLzO8FB8ad6/s1600-h/IMG_1794%5B2%5D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMG_1794" border="0" alt="IMG_1794" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgucnfb1kBO9TMIjXVuq4lQLcPOf3B3hRlgbwAHd3_MEpNnvPf9N3gFAP3cK3G4HRIoErpB7ojuBVW8mTFIvo85gJ7fpz9uEWB0PX1CG5XQkGUh5fe45hstfZSLiDJXQTPKUzTBQ3qP4Ty-/?imgmax=800" width="164" height="244" /></a> </p> <p>After that doggy break, back to the lighting exercises. This time I’m trying to balance flash and ambient indoors. It was late in the evening, so my ambient was 100% artificial lighting. I adjusted my flash until the vase looked Ok (1/8th). In looking back, I think the above exposure was just right, but I wanted the vase just a little bit brighter, so I dialed up the flash, resulting in a lot more spill in the background, as you’ll find out after the jump.</p> <div style="padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px" id="scid:0a7b020c-2e51-4379-b078-a5387e1e26be:fc615c29-fe47-483e-8a67-57448bdb2675" class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent"><a name='more'></a></div> <p></p> <p>Here’s the ambient-only exposure at f/5.6 (<em>Note to self</em>: f/5.6 because my zoom lens won’t go wider when fully zoomed) and a shutter speed of 1/200 (all were shot at ISO 400):</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_8l-XiIW-gB95lOcLwRpAxfJbhUW70Vk9GZtffDm8J_kROy2xZs1cjujHHzppZqZDRC7AhmhkpP2aQPMYNVHUUBcPDyluttylMJl1JtBKCB6LYbsLzrZuOXAPrXjuNCL4tnb_n-rDAsK-/s1600-h/IMG_1793%5B2%5D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMG_1793" border="0" alt="IMG_1793" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFcTkYUlXEVcqNCkarFvwtw43X0bDhFlYVwlW3zPJ1G6fWqlOVNKpi81mZw-cM0t8z4s4KGocKcNex4Cd1x_l0VlJKCnV8tN6KADUH130ENQJqEn_90TWZMMsJ-ZQ_wCFlDvuPIw7BbpM-/?imgmax=800" width="164" height="244" /></a> </p> <p>As I mentioned, I wanted a bit more light on the vase, so I finally went with for 1/8th + 0.7 for the flash (my 430 EX II). Unfortunately, that amount of flash also caused a bit more light spill to the background wall:</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRD82bZpmLwDXUEU_yBTwiSsNP7BJsFAZzV9hKoFyFSiPZQkkC9rouwC73Zj7N9qPJ1HVG1pFynG-guBoWcQEeHUsCbVOl3efbAZ1mNWkZX7vnqvKu4ndyUNAwgcqWflSwwIw8hZMnGLdh/s1600-h/IMG_1795%5B2%5D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMG_1795" border="0" alt="IMG_1795" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih5zH-4PusTtBBUc2vLUiL7ZVU5wz5eO1crg6-6d4qpIIZ7B3O34H9cGJmCp61uJBvPxLlHi7rfhDG4C6hM9SBYvVpByQkAdMlzRdv48pFl3bRBtt_a4yJpvxoW_VSdtxX0mOVXFs42FMU/?imgmax=800" width="164" height="244" /></a> </p> <p>Now I started adding more ambient, a bit at a time, by opening up my shutter (using a slower shutter speed to allow more ambient to register in the final exposure). </span></span>I was at my daughter's inline hockey practice a few days ago, and since my wrist is sore from a crash landing (yep, on inline skates... first one to mention mid life crisis gets banned :-P ), I decided to take some pics instead of practicing my (non existent) skating skills:<br />

(BTW, I really enjoy readng strobist (though I'm pretty late to the show), and I totally dig <a href="http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101-hard-light.html">DH's humor and writing style</a>. What's that got to do with anything? Well, read on if you wanna know.)<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>I think I got some pretty cool looking pics, like the next one, which I shot lying on my belly:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYHlS28PDIu9bZAJ-_AGeXtAxB6oSoKAttVpFOiPjqYc1PxzHPlxO-UWEhzbR9kVHKte9kIEyKGZZ7PPBW96Tu0OKSwnOJhGc3Tw3QqRLqr-m66hz4Ue-6KiOh4eksKDIwAiAUnxIEWNhV/s1600/IMG_0749.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYHlS28PDIu9bZAJ-_AGeXtAxB6oSoKAttVpFOiPjqYc1PxzHPlxO-UWEhzbR9kVHKte9kIEyKGZZ7PPBW96Tu0OKSwnOJhGc3Tw3QqRLqr-m66hz4Ue-6KiOh4eksKDIwAiAUnxIEWNhV/s320/IMG_0749.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Problem is, my filter got a little dirty, so I decided to remove it. Big mistake! I now have a friggin' <i>scratch</i> on my lens! Ugh!<br />
<br />
The setup was just a pair of speedlights at half power (a 430 EX II and a Vivitar 285 HV) mounted high on each side of the rink (not even sure if it's called a rink, but anyway...), as in the "<a href="http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/04/on-assignment-big-gym-little-lights.html">Big gym, little lights</a>" On Assignment post over at <a href="http://strobist.blogspot.com/">Strobist</a>. I had to bump my ISO to 1600, since the lens I'm using only goes to f 5.6 while zoomed. Fortunately, it seems Lightroom 3 will save me from purchasing a more expensive lens for the time being, as its noise reduction is pretty darn impressive.<br />
<br />
But what about the title, you ask? Well, after shooting the practice session, I asked for a volunteer to try my hand a a portrait using flash, but I forgot to dial my flash down. I <i>really</i> nuked the poor fellow!<br />
<br />

Since I’m taking this course  about two years late, I didn’t want to peek at the results beforehand, so I just did my best to come up with something interesting. Which I didn’t, but that’s to be expected from jumping head-on into something I don’t have the hang of yet.</p> <p>My first attempt was pretty bleh (you can tell there’s a piece of paper and a metal fruit bowl in there, nothing special about it):</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_3mdBmA21Mx7p4uqNTG6PYwFwGkUlrfcn_5S4yfeH2u6-QcDrs4F5izE0Fqnl8cJHgrln-dpZZUUxEO5O3G1Fz1D3aC0X_9UtQLYRy_jqxv0EuFWhWKfqL3tQS-8pLManymZJUnjoHsW5/s1600-h/Tarea_1%5B2%5D.jpg"><img title="Tarea_1" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="164" alt="Tarea_1" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyxDtani3NYxZ8AvvQkbJKUx7ILi870vHKNi4Bkc2HXqp34BzbllInL-Pys2IfMxyKcLMXgee-P90VUMVX2xjn3EqKXfmoeA8b1o0zxj5Y2ydAsH-C22VWPdssv-JX2sSeOylf9fpcNXLb/?imgmax=800" width="244" border="0" /></a> </p> <div class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent" id="scid:0a7b020c-2e51-4379-b078-a5387e1e26be:47a9c16b-bdef-4802-908d-43a47c72faa6" style="padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; float: none; padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-top: 0px"><a name='more'></a></div> <p>Next up, a shot with a “better” background (just a piece of black cloth underneath), and the highlights a bit harder:</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXgN8FPX4JqobBHNsXozFABEnwvQhmwaGinXFKV4oIDCgKZ7JtPtDoEBpinaYMo82svHnkW5w2tbksWK-b-1VEoHYQSqYzk8ytK1FfaPd0YeIFgLX3vJvnBBKRQKoL-y507JVanTPC7sJJ/s1600-h/Tarea_2%5B2%5D.jpg"><img title="Tarea_2" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="164" alt="Tarea_2" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpmjHD7iX1eGAcyQ3Kit_yBna4ol8lmMUqQWHnZffJzo0pGpYv72u5vfE8vSGBjBpet11jtpIOuhF2r_44ew9xSOflz8l4dZGhJW_Tm2vUGargD7tkDhryZ6e0WID-QoiXyi6xTLXxojr6/?imgmax=800" width="244" border="0" /></a> </p> <p>After doing those two shots (and feeling pretty smug), I decided to take a look at the real entries from this assignment (you can check ‘em out in <a href="http://strobist.blogspot.com/2007/08/lighting-102-cooking-light-assignment.html" target="_blank">this post</a>). Whoa! There were some seriously cool pics in there! I was totally humbled by the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/randomprocesses/912646724/" target="_blank">Scoop</a>, and decided I had to try it out.</p> <p>The results weren’t too great (I need to practice more!), but I’ll include them here for completeness (after all, this is an online record of <em>my</em> photographic attempts):</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg24qiscPA-0dpkW5qCRNiAGhiljzK6s8udOuwgHA-Sj75Y_owSoAev9xpxrzHM0G6fYJPJaudmic0xO7XqG75jyesFQeQ-qYXS7foGkC9VJDGSgMkYPsW20BxCNPNNXYF_Fja4BgrOqGTr/s1600-h/IMG_0569%5B2%5D.jpg"><img title="IMG_0569" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="164" alt="IMG_0569" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfIBPgPqxZUcVcczAAGitS9EbhBzSBvZlLg-XeT57WSZyLgHwVkwa0J5WKg2YNmpUkAglQ8IpTWXf9sUuillKmoAcFUCj_6KdqY8_o1ULz5Yksy50JE4uSusLK5_q10bo9l8KyNwwACTF6/?imgmax=800" width="244" border="0" /></a> </p> <p>A few planes of separation in this trio:</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG6ETm9CAC0KqBIMG8IvWBr2NnVYbPHlIs-p2b7WNfcSbfgmjHpTfP0uvGFDhUkI3XJRdVkKftDlP22kREOUjE-OIJKP0Zn5qVafBH34JJnWI23IfsADRd6b0qV1JZM-dvlhnEAkJN5eYs/s1600-h/IMG_0574%5B2%5D.jpg"><img title="IMG_0574" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="164" alt="IMG_0574" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoNgySWpY-sMpFSoz1ps8OnoXsgl7yhj3EZErQFe15mGAaGu7Uh2gPAUWKO95-T36kVauykT4E1pwthyphenhyphen5-aT3fbbAWnbNpdSd511XGs7urS2ucRf90ySVc_Y1kcq1UC6Ket1OK-EnyBQy3/?imgmax=800" width="244" border="0" /></a> </p> <p></p> <p></p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHk3a7hEczs2CSAbE3tbMCT9fz6pQU05-luyQBDIRbQHxXt_NcwOx0ydDozZE3N0d7CM72tqSzNwh5WbgXTHcLTgrMBM14oiDI5DFfmvLj6a2t1l0uJgTmYp125A0icy5fioGd2nTIj6oz/s1600-h/IMG_0573%5B2%5D.jpg"><img title="IMG_0573" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="164" alt="IMG_0573" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiWGNUF7Q2gItIS1IiZddQC9M_YdvWz7zBoC1G0NuSEKN2IRgkXxFqdi0FxAKZ1DXcUA8CV_fTkwIZ4If1SZub5_7uVqtKVgIRiLyNZYvThwPIAi9OA4I3-6yxqxBJMRfjqfATzdN0BVIn/?imgmax=800" width="244" border="0" /></a> </p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJZ-qWngRcQ8kT_u7ZSW4Yv_1yyv_-2BuZKELOW4d7Tx2r6e-NzGig6HPBlB3imfOX0R1wLgHHhyphenhyphencl0xChEx5VlTTjQ_zSu6Hidn-YwulDWfp_BOQ-8g87zXSYtNXk5P_J93c01JZUnATl/s1600-h/IMG_0572%5B2%5D.jpg"><img title="IMG_0572" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="164" alt="IMG_0572" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg80euvHZch-FgLo8N1MXHzIY8QhkSXv-eRMcDVmnGd0tr5Z3A8f3CMrqgF29iSOJDjMgB_wpa3jgmNily36zFlfLz7GW-gggq2ePx8GFimb0ddPQU3Y6IuyfRhKXipmUZ_-TIqdUn-08vX/?imgmax=800" width="244" border="0" /></a> </p> <p>Ok, ditch that, let’s concentrate on the quality of the specular reflections. Much better than my last attempts at shooting glass bottles. This time, I did it “by the book” (you know, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Light-Science-Introduction-Photographic-Lighting/dp/0240808193/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1270412526&sr=8-1" target="_blank">that book</a>). </p> <div style="padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px" id="scid:0a7b020c-2e51-4379-b078-a5387e1e26be:f86d5480-d8ce-45fb-aa8b-3a01385c5a5c" class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent"><a name='more'></a></div> <p>This one was somewhat harder than my last “subject”. I started off with this:</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRacX63wWGXjoUdtIbuPURkSN_F8IoCKryF01p_3eUpYiqYIAdI0B5dtng1qE4K6NS6rz7lT1Gip0EKD5ufAc4Ezrg1gSZ7Hl90a_pu26JDms_wOTBPmUPYO65_tmXWxLZoSXRLOslnvXp/s1600-h/IMG_0448_small%5B3%5D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMG_0448_small" border="0" alt="IMG_0448_small" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLn_RNDvuDhFyvJDhb58LPklU9vMG2POb64BAa6nd8OMvvdXmdTpNjg1a7qusl1ofiGVdzLngkwFkRacJLuburPZVcrXb7pDD1K876PmdGlXCK26EKRkZOtoegIJXgqZlC9zKMYB9JkweT/?imgmax=800" width="226" height="371" /></a> </p> <p>(Yeah, the shot is crappy and the framing even more so… ).</p> <p>First, you need to get the framing right. And that means checking your background and your lighting so you don’t get any light spilled on the glass:</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1xrUiVF1tzqJBykfLWqd6UY-I1nkpklbThD4Y8iro3Ytnl7DtrgWdHl9E1KxNh1k2TLqSlX38FaRdQWZMX5W9mSIBqUKLEvoft3LbGLQd5rVmiDakumPR0oRmyEtaLbTA_bOu-g0Tfvsg/s1600-h/IMG_0456_small%5B3%5D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMG_0456_small" border="0" alt="IMG_0456_small" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6ok1-AftbzwGVmMZ9Q5dRuS97GKRNjdso8aQM5f-g3H-VAA-VOWTcEfAFk6rdgQgH7OlvWRmMapPOtlL_7bw3TeiCwSqXgzMtY4m2ozEemFvjNzQy_0QgvgpP2lMLum2sJwqII2ckJfOU/?imgmax=800" width="226" height="357" /></a> </p> <p>Next, you <em>try</em> to add highlights.  Good luck with that! You need a pretty big <em>diffused </em>light source for that. I didn’t have much room to place my lights (and I don’t have a softbox), so the image you see at the top is the best I could get. Here’s another attempt (in which you can also see the flash head in the reflection):</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifSA8SgtMJShoKLYzKAcLKl4fMYIE095aZbpCY2hR1JiOhGDA-TNOhP0JBisHzWdZBcs6WyCb363JOp711bvzQ6Rci2QVaXFRKLbjbifFHnPpq0UQLJUn8bgKYwalx-koApek6uV3Rlt7w/s1600-h/IMG_0469_small%5B3%5D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMG_0469_small" border="0" alt="IMG_0469_small" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwGIQpJJePS2LN9FITuKAxtMHvR2h5HkAM0RzGz1TZ6qWQNtO5jlOLRokcPTznJl2HcRE4H5B2NPAI77KPIWt2D_M7LuU_KPEHbHmzgbsLxdHyZdkrwFJw540iNIg6iBxLlBK-SirwDqAV/?imgmax=800" width="226" height="387" /></a> </p> <p>BTW, the illumination shown above is called “bright field illumination”, in which you have a bright background and you try to keep the edges of the glass dark. The opposite is dark field illumination, in which you shoot against a dark background and try to keep the edges of the glass bright. I think they turned out pretty nice, but in the second one a by-stander got in the way. I think it still looks cool, though.<br />

You just need to follow the subject with your camera (I turned on servo- focusing, so the camera tried to keep the subject in focus all the time).Joey (aka Pepe)http://www.blogger.com/profile/12970189864356104845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7489210869133035069.post-4880996892255549192010-04-11T11:56:00.001-04:002010-04-15T09:58:20.409-04:00First shoot! (part 3: glass)Last part of my <i>First Shoot</i> blunders: shooting glass. I read "Light: Science and Magic", but didn't actually do much of the exercises... and lost a chance to get the photo I wanted. There was this cool bar with bottles lighted from below, and I wanted to get some pics of people standing beside the bottles: The bar alone looked like this: <br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu0xUz6h8PaFhMcXx6G5-33-Mq0-1xW0PX10lh1XqDTBnNtpG3T6HREeqdDiJMcaomfZhCdgxl7CDA9QRshPIfmuihTnVZtZiz6ntT_Njo599NZGTMnkNcT4VDm8D3KTJ6N9G-XRKFUoPm/s1600/IMG_0083_small.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu0xUz6h8PaFhMcXx6G5-33-Mq0-1xW0PX10lh1XqDTBnNtpG3T6HREeqdDiJMcaomfZhCdgxl7CDA9QRshPIfmuihTnVZtZiz6ntT_Njo599NZGTMnkNcT4VDm8D3KTJ6N9G-XRKFUoPm/s320/IMG_0083_small.jpg" border="0" /></a></div> <br />Nice! But as soon as I added some light to it... <br /> <div class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent" id="scid:0a7b020c-2e51-4379-b078-a5387e1e26be:dabb1b91-87ad-4ec7-bc73-3b444f52d2e2" style="padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; float: none; padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-top: 0px"><a name='more'></a></div> <br /><a name="more"></a>Here's another shot, from a different angle, which shows the position from which I wanted to shoot: <br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0wmcN5un4oNG_mIL-B4jNM8fgGxAckoaq11R3rv4NbmDIB9FmjumrtgixWI0BZeRdonUVzYxyqSYeitbzOb_Vqm_6tcdsBvxVpiInpjNHgOQLxLgj5mXYpCzQp7SmHrEIgrzaP0l72Pxa/s1600/IMG_0185_small.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0wmcN5un4oNG_mIL-B4jNM8fgGxAckoaq11R3rv4NbmDIB9FmjumrtgixWI0BZeRdonUVzYxyqSYeitbzOb_Vqm_6tcdsBvxVpiInpjNHgOQLxLgj5mXYpCzQp7SmHrEIgrzaP0l72Pxa/s320/IMG_0185_small.jpg" border="0" /></a></div> <br />Still looking nice! But guess what: glass reflects light. A lot. And glass bottles reflect light from almost anywhere. Like in the following shot: <br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center"></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center"></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center"></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center"></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiidQeedyA_AZYskvhSIpSKPTIFezxQyMaQOoWf3O47rvZMopq_bv8nr7brMsT3VNQJrOZ1wCqL9tZz8hsTJkSd0DStCros2OjX1HBkZy-iAeDq8oCxok5ON4xFX5g22BVJv_XEyF_pAu6v/s1600/IMG_0179_small.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiidQeedyA_AZYskvhSIpSKPTIFezxQyMaQOoWf3O47rvZMopq_bv8nr7brMsT3VNQJrOZ1wCqL9tZz8hsTJkSd0DStCros2OjX1HBkZy-iAeDq8oCxok5ON4xFX5g22BVJv_XEyF_pAu6v/s320/IMG_0179_small.jpg" border="0" /></a></div> <br />Way to go, Joe! If I had only done my homework on shooting glass (and other shiny, spherical things), I would have immediately realized that the only way to get a decent pic would have been to snoot my flash and direct it to her face. Or maybe get someone in a white shirt to stand beside her and bounce my flash on his or her back, while keeping it flagged so no light spilled on the bottles. As I said, I think a learned a lot this time, so next time things should work out much better ('specially since I ordered a few radio remotes -- the cheap ones -- so I'll be able to take the flash off the camera. I'll post here with results). Joey (aka Pepe)http://www.blogger.com/profile/12970189864356104845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7489210869133035069.post-77465795793827172712010-04-11T11:36:00.003-04:002010-04-11T12:12:46.773-04:00First shoot! (part 2: falloff)As I said in my previous post, some of the pictures I took looked pretty bad, as I made quite a few mistakes (Let's chalk it up on it being my first time). I think the first and most important one was not really getting into the role of photographer, I was more like a guest with a camera, and that held me back quite a bit (I didn't get really close to people, I didn't try for better angles, etc.). Oh, well...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>First I want to document (so I <i>don't</i> make that same mistake again!) a really silly mistake: bouncing flash from the wrong direction, and getting some nasty falloff across the picture. As you can see from the pic below, I bounced the flash to the left of the camera and a bit forward (duh! That wasn't smart), acusing the guy in the left to be flooded by light, while the girl on the right is pretty dark:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxZimQhXVubg_hiW_CdJRoqmEJJToMfrs_PE4RFjBGCtRUIYEQjZ6z6rd0tOrboxGKdJz22U3z5bfd7q7ecdTfurqeoUnhzPHKnfhw2mIeqDjLbq18EURZuO4imZQL71EaHg6NMEdpKf1G/s1600/IMG_0097.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxZimQhXVubg_hiW_CdJRoqmEJJToMfrs_PE4RFjBGCtRUIYEQjZ6z6rd0tOrboxGKdJz22U3z5bfd7q7ecdTfurqeoUnhzPHKnfhw2mIeqDjLbq18EURZuO4imZQL71EaHg6NMEdpKf1G/s320/IMG_0097.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Nasty! I should have bounced from behind me, of course. I guess you could fix this by making a couple of different JPG's at different exposures and then blending them in Photoshop, but it's a dumb mistake and easy to avoid... don't do it!Joey (aka Pepe)http://www.blogger.com/profile/12970189864356104845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7489210869133035069.post-64505782883753395392010-04-06T12:36:00.013-04:002010-04-11T12:12:14.798-04:00First shoot! (part 1)Yes! I had my first chance to do a "real" shoot yesterday, and even though the results were less than spectacular, at least I learned a few things.<br />
<br />
First, some background: I'm a hobbyist, and I recently bought my first (d)SLR, a Canon T1i, along with an 18-200 zoom and a 430 EX II flash. I've been taking pictures for quite some time, but flash photography always scared me a bit (besides, this is my first hot-shoe equipped camera, so my only experience with flash had been with the pop-up variety... yuck!). Anyway, on to the shoot...<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
It was a company cocktail, to which I was invited as a guest, and I asked the guy in charge if I could bring my camera along and shoot some photos, to which he agreed immediately as he didn't have any "official" photographer for the event. I left from work a bit earlier than usual, because I wanted to arrive early and take a look at the venue, but rush hour here in Santiago said otherwise and I arrived when a few of the guests were already there. After taking a look inside, I started to sweat a bit... <i>very</i> dimly lit, black ceilings and wide, open spaces with nothing to bounce flash off of... yikes! Here's an ambient only pic, shot at ISO 3200, f/5.6 and 1/50 (I stayed at f 5.6, since I knew I'd be zooming in and out, and I didn't want my exposure to jump around... though considering the negligible amount of ambient light that registered, maybe I should have left the lens at max. aperture and adjusted my FEC. Next time!)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgelV-uJvLrfZ8Q4lzCFbc6RLyNBqBOKwG4nyZ7r3EPYI5T-CmRX-0yrmMs3i71JSGZDpeKarh1pk09uTXZnqrRrzKeULJYD8D-zppxVUnpLywN10xNtwubDkUFbutX7tLHr8SqB-fUZwvq/s1600/IMG_0120_small.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457065148433797394" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgelV-uJvLrfZ8Q4lzCFbc6RLyNBqBOKwG4nyZ7r3EPYI5T-CmRX-0yrmMs3i71JSGZDpeKarh1pk09uTXZnqrRrzKeULJYD8D-zppxVUnpLywN10xNtwubDkUFbutX7tLHr8SqB-fUZwvq/s320/IMG_0120_small.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; height: 214px; width: 320px;" /></a><br />
<br />
And here's the same picture with a ton of flash, bounced up and to my left:<br />
<br />

<br />
Not too bad, but some pictures I took looked really horrible. More in my next post.Joey (aka Pepe)http://www.blogger.com/profile/12970189864356104845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7489210869133035069.post-83954200322844570462010-04-04T16:11:00.002-04:002010-04-11T12:11:09.600-04:00Texture - Light: Science and Magic<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><br />
Here's an interesting exercise on revealing texture using just light.<br />
Subject: a very uninteresting gray glove lighted from above:<br />
<div><br />
<div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvsYpV3XC66m2nHeCzoPRRPGL6mVgh8Kx6tbPQULiUnJawFU9gfnDtDyz6bT9xN7h1IUlqM8Us37ovfSaVnueXq0pSfS3nwXiZ8FNlnIggLpOtvRVP9flE5PV1yiGDBj6mSlj4tIpSgkB8/s1600/IMG_0016.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5456431603734650418" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvsYpV3XC66m2nHeCzoPRRPGL6mVgh8Kx6tbPQULiUnJawFU9gfnDtDyz6bT9xN7h1IUlqM8Us37ovfSaVnueXq0pSfS3nwXiZ8FNlnIggLpOtvRVP9flE5PV1yiGDBj6mSlj4tIpSgkB8/s320/IMG_0016.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; height: 320px; width: 219px;" /></a><br />
<div><br />
And now the same glove lighted from the side (notice how much more texture is revealed):<br />
<br />

Ok, here goes... first exercises on lighting, as per the Lighting 102 "course" on <a href="http://strobist.blogspot.com/">Strobist</a>.<br />
<br />
Different angles for my model (still don't have a remote for my flash, so I used a spotlight)<br />
